The New Street Dance Team

With the prominent conversations surrounding the #BlackLivesMatter movement, we have taken a look at our own sport and how we can improve. We have listened, learned and decided to rename our Hip Hop Team to Street Dance Team.

What we see at competition, on tv and movies known as “mainstream hip hop”, not true hip hop dance and does not pay credit where credit is due.
Hip Hop emerged out of Black Culture in the US. White people took this form of dance and created their own “white washed” version of it but still called it Hip Hop and profited off of it.

We are choosing to more accurately name our team and continue to educate ourselves of where and how our styles evolved. We call on our governing bodies the Saskatchewan Cheerleading Association and Cheer Canada and other university dance teams, to review their categories and styles and educate themselves on the background and origins of what they are doing and Have people teaching and judging who have a great knowledge in all areas of street dance.
